Whether you're a local looking for something new or have a visitor exploring Oberlin, there's something here for everyone.
Things to Do:
1. Allen Memorial Art Museum:
Ranked among the top five campus art museums in the country, Oberlin’s museum is free, beautiful, and prestigious. I love visiting the rotating exhibits and attending unique programs like tea talks and guest lectures.
2. Crocker Park & University Circle:
The free ObieExpress shuttle makes it easy to explore local favorites like Crocker Park—home to Trader Joe’s and festive winter displays—and University Circle. My friends and I love using the shuttle to visit Cleveland’s museums, green spaces, and diverse restaurants.
3. Apollo Theater:
Take a leisurely stroll or have a picnic at Tri-Village Park. It's a great spot to relax amidst nature, with walking trails and green spaces perfect for unwinding.
4. Vermilion:
A short car drive from Oberlin, Vermilion is a charming lakeside town perfect for sunset beach walks. My friends and I love visiting its local shops and ending the day with sundaes at a nearby diner; I’m already planning my first summer trip there this May.
5. Attend a School-sponsored Event:
Oberlin students and residents enjoy numerous free or discounted excursions, often advertised in the daily Oberlin Digest newsletter. From fall orchard trips and Cedar Point outings to visits at Detroit’s Motown Museum, there are endless options. One of my highlights was attending a professional musical in Cleveland’s world-renowned theater district for a fraction of the usual cost.
Places to Eat:
1. Kim’s:
A local favorite, Kim’s often has lines out the door for its delicious Korean cuisine. I highly recommend the Spicy Tofu Stew, Bibimbap, or the nostalgic Red Bean Buns for dessert. With plenty of vegan and vegetarian options, it truly offers something for everyone. Plus, you can browse their in-house grocery section for snacks like mochi, frozen dumplings, and Ramune.
2. ThiNi Thai:
ThiNi Thai is a downtown standout for authentic Thai cuisine. Favorite dishes include the savory Black Pepper Shrimp, the herb-filled Phat Kee Mao, and their vegan-friendly spring rolls. It is the perfect go-to spot for students looking for high-quality, flavorful meals within walking distance of campus.
3. Aladdin’s Eatery:
Aladdin’s Eatery offers fresh, flavorful Lebanese-American cuisine with plenty of dietary options. I love their hearty appetizers like Hummus and Loubie Bzeit, and their refreshing Lebanese Salata. Don’t miss their fresh-pressed juices—the Carrot Apple is a personal favorite.
4. Bingo Chinese Restaurant:
Bingo is a go-to for Chinese cuisine, featuring a spicy Vegetarian Mapo Tofu and both steamed or pan-fried dumplings. Pair your meal with a refreshing Passion Fruit Bubble Tea, or try the popular pan-fried rice noodles with your choice of beef, chicken, or shrimp.
5. The Feve:
Whether you’re craving wings (the tofu and chicken with Teriyaki Garlic are favorites) or a hearty Seared Ahi Tuna Salad, The Feve delivers. It has also filled the void left by the closure of Black River, serving as my new favorite brunch spot for comforting blueberry pancakes and creative seasonal salads.
